Opened in March 2000 and now the centrepiece of the capital's New Year's Eve fireworks celebrations, London Eye is the biggest observation wheel in the world with spectacular views across the city. Visitors can see up to 40 kilometres in all directions from one of the 32 capsules, each weighing 10 tonnes. Last year, more than 3.5 million people road the wheel, making this the UK's most popular paid for visitor attraction. The standard flight lasts about 30 minutes, offering breathtaking vistas from high above the River Thames. On a clear day, visitors can spot some of London's most famous and contentious landmarks such as Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, The Gherkin, the Houses of Parliament, St Paul's Cathedral and Westminster Abbey. For a special occasion, take a Champagne Flight and enjoy a glass of chilled Laurent-Perrier champagne as the capsule gently rises to a height of 135 metres, and after 8pm, a Night Flight aboard the wheel provides panoramic views of the city with its landmarks lit up. During busy periods, visitors may wish to upgrade to a Fast Track ticket and avoid the sizeable queues.
