None of this book would be possible without the amazing street artists out there. This book has been put together from a collection of photographs that Jay Mitchell has taken over the years living in London and travelling throughout the world.

Back at The Book Club once again to represent for the ladies,  The Doctor’s Orders present another of their ‘Queens of Hip-Hop’ parties with their strongest all female line up to date.  Set to keep the dance-floor bumping all night and prove that anything guys can do girls can do better are a dream team of both established and emerging talent!

Headlining we have the incomparable Sarah Lovewho since her early days spinning for Kung Fu has firmly established herself as ‘the first lady of Hip-Hop’. The self-proclaimed ‘one woman worldwide wrecking machine’ established herself not only as an incredible club DJ but also a first class presenter with work for both MTV and BBC but it is in her favorite place behind that we have her rocking tonight.

Clara Amfo has been the voice of music for a minute now with her prime time Kiss FM weekday shows and presenting MTV’s chart shows. She is now making an effortless slide from the studio to the club and putting a face to the voice and music with firing party sets.

Florence & The Machine may not be the first name you think of when it comes to Hip-Hop however Isa ‘Machine’ Summers, keyboardist and writer for the chart toppers, cut her teeth on the music scene as a Hip-Hop obsessed DJ and producer working with many of the UK’s finest and remixing for the likes of Beyonce. She takes a night off her manic touring schedule to jump back behind the decks for this rare DJ set.

Back once again we have the brilliant Chery Icewho did such a brilliant job warming up the crown last time she has eased her way up the bill! She’s joined by Beanzwho is a regular at The Doctor’s Orders events and helps produce TheFunhouseTV.com but now makes her debut on the decks for us as we keep things funky & female with The Queens of Hip-Hop.

With so many talented and popular crews in London all experts in their own sound tonight is all about bringing them together to show how they can rock alongside each other in the spirit of friendly competition. With sound system clashes being a fundamental part of Hip-Hop and Reggae alike this party really will bring something for everyone as we shake a leg to all manor of base heavy sounds.

Representing for London’s No.1 Hip-Hop crew, The Doctor’s Orders, are Spin Doctor & Mr Thing. Having started throwing parties back in 2005 they have welcomed the great and the good of the Hip-Hop world and thrown 100’s of parties in venues up and down the country. Tonight they will be showing off the skills that have kept them on top for so long with two of the most in demand resident DJs in the land.

Since forming in 2007, Reggae Roast have forged a reputation as the leading light in the resurgence of the UK Dub / Reggae scene. Combining the label, events and sound system they are spreading the conscious message in the music far and wide, whilst gaining a reputation as one of the key players in the new wave of British Reggae. They will be repped by Moodie Ranks & Adam Prescott as they bless us to two house of everything dubwise!

Breakin' Bread have pulled out their finest heavyweights for this crew clash. After 15 years of running Soul, Funk and Hip-Hop nights in the capital, Breakin Bread know what it takes to win a battle and Para and Baila are the men for the job. Para is one of the UK's top scratch DJ's and has released numerous mix CD's, singles and an album on the Breakin Bread label. Baila is his right hand man and a fine b-boy, actor and DJ in his own right! Together they combine to bring the finest mix of soulful sounds.

With each crew playing 2 x 1 hour sets it is sure to be a whole night packed with great music as London’s Hip-Hop scene show and prove.

Tracey Emin's art is instantly recognisable and her store has all sorts Posters, Household items, Ltd Edition prints, clothing and more bearing her designs.

Its a friendly, cool little store so, if you're in Spitalfields, go and check it out before heading off to the English Restaurant around the corner for a cup of tea, or the Golden Heart for a pint.

Named after the cult pulp fiction novel ‘Elvis, Jesus, and Coca Cola’, inspiration for the brand grew from the story within the pages. Fulfilling the stereotype of the typical American beatnik, irreverent, voyeuristic and undeniably raw around the edges, the book’s anti-hero Kinky Friedman embodies the unique joie de vie that drives Elvis Jesus as a brand.

Inspired by the literature and films dedicated to society’s rebels, Elvis Jesus grew from the ground up, an operation that began with one collection bundled into the boot of a car, freewheeling the country for a foot in the door, to filling the shelves of some of the most exclusive stores around the globe. The surroundings may have changed, but the journey of Elvis Jesus has never betrayed our roots in beautiful, individual and challenging clothes for men and women. 

Designs have an undeniably in-your-face attitude, but are laced with a hint of the irony that fans of Elvis Jesus have become well versed in. Pastiche and humour work alongside the street art influences that have developed within the collections, which today have grown to include knitwear, leather, sweatshirts, denim, tailoring, shirts, jersey and accessories. 

Remaining integral to the design ethos and heart of Elvis Jesus, embellishment of all kinds adorn the t-shirts, layering and building with rivets, a variety of beading treatments and embroidery. This is the kind of line up any fan of real ‘Golden Era’ 90’s Hip-Hop dreams about and luckily for them The Doctor’s Orders have made it a reality. With three of New York’s finest performing alongside three of the UK’s plus the added bonus of a DJ set from one of the most prolific beat makers & vinyl diggers in the game this is certain to be a massive night! 

The Beatnuts are one of the most energetic Hip-Hop duos ever! Their distinctly Nu Yorican funk led, latin tinged sounds have seen every Hip-Hop party across the globe bumping to the sounds of bangers like “Watch Out Now’, ‘No Escapin This’, ‘Off The Books’ & ‘Se Acabo’ to name just a few. As part of the Native Tongues collective they have worked with everyone from Method Man & Common to The Stereo MC’s & Akon in a career that kicked off in 1993 and shows no sign of letting up!

Jeru The Damaja came to prominence as a member of the Gangstarr Foundation headed up by DJ Premier & the late great Guru. Since first appearing on wax on ‘I’m The Man’ on Gangstarr’s 1992 ‘Daily Operation’ album he went of to record a slew of DJ Premier produced classics including ‘Come Clean’, ‘Ya Playin Yaself’ & ‘Me or the Papes’. The ‘Origininal Dirty Rotten Scoundral’ lives up to the moniker on stage with one of the most entertaining live shows out there so be sure to be front and centre! 

Another member of the Gangstarr Foundation Afu Ra in fact made his debut on Jeru’s 1994 classic ‘The Sun Rises In the East’. A dedicated martial artist his debut album featured beats from production royalty including DJ Premier, Da Beatminerz & DJ Muggs. This skilled lyricist will be blessing us with a rare UK performance.

Never one’s to leave you short changed The Doctor’s Orders have also lined up one of the most talented UK MC’s on the scene right now in the shape of Iron Braydz and an exclusive DJ set for The Beatnut’s own Juju alongside Spin Doctor & Chris P Cuts.

In its 28^th glorious year, DMC continues to bring together the globe’s freshest DJ talents, vetted by a series of gruelling heats from London to Tokyo and Brazil, all culminating in one of the most entertaining and jaw dropping shows you will ever witness. This year’s UK Final will be even more mouth wateringly, boundary pushing than the last with fantastic competitors from around the country battling for a place at the World Finals.

Following the successful addition of computer based DJ programs last year, the battlers are sure to raise the bar even further in 2012. With heavyweights Rane and Serato as sponsors, DMC are dedicated to moving with the times to represent the current and future DJ styles.

2012’s UK DJ Final and Battle For UK Supremacy takes place at the Relentless Garage, London on 20^th July with the winners going head to head with the best in the world at the DMC World DJ Championships on 27^th and 28^th September at Kentish Town’s HMV Forum.

To become a DMC World Champion, DJs around the world need to use techniques such as scratching & cutting to manipulate turntables in order to create their own musical arrangements, performing live in front of an audience filled with both the knowledgeable DMC fans and lucky newcomers being initiated to this fantastic contest.

With World Championship winners over the years including the superstar likes of the Scratch Perverts, A-Trak (Kanye West’s DJ), Q Bert, Craze and Mixmaster Mike (Beastie Boys), fame and respect could well accompany the bountiful prizes on offer (including a treasure trove of goodies provided by sponsors Rane, Serato, Novation and Sennheiser).

In between the battles on the night, DMC have provided a real treat for hip-hop fans and devoted turntablism followers. World Champions DJ Switch and DJ Nelson will go head to head in an exclusive battle for the entertainment of every lucky person in the audience. Truly a Clash of the Titans.

Also performing on the night are a homegrown rap supergroup by the name of The Four Owls. Consisting of incredible rappers in their own right, (Verb T, Fliptrix, BVA MC and Leaf Dog), the Owls are sure to bring an energetic performance, it won’t be hard to see why they’ve developed such a dedicated fanbase.

Charismatic host Inja returns for another successful year of hosting duties.

The Battle for UK Supremacy will also take place on the night, where DJs  go head-to-head for a place to compete in the Champions League of the DJ world on 27^th and 28^th of September, a competition that will determine who goes home as the universal winner of all winners…

DMC: A Brief History

From its humble DJ record service beginnings in the early 80s, to establishing magazines, a street wear brand and music compilation CDs [including Back to Mine, described by NME magazine as 'probably the greatest compilation series ever'], DMC has been vital in the growth of the DJ as a highly influential modern day cultural icon.

DMC redefined the role and image of the turntablist, believing strongly in the idea that the DJ could create something new and exciting armed with nothing but two decks, a mixer and healthy selection of vinyl.

27 years of hard fought battles later, and DMC has built an army of dedicated followers worldwide, housing successful branches and competitions in 25 countries. In the UK, host venues have included The Royal Albert Hall, Wembley Arena, The 02, Brixton Academy and the Hammersmith Apollo. Whilst the Championship Finals were staged internationally in Italy, Paris and New York, the spiritual home for the DMC World DJ Championship has become London. With DMC making appearances everywhere from Richard and Judy and Blue Peter to MTV and even being entwined within the plot of an episode of CSI: NY, it is clear to see the organization’s impact on popular culture.

Many great names have taken part over the years and are now etched forever within the historic visual series of DVDs and on the DMCWORLD.COM web site’s DMC Hall of Fame. The inspirational performances of the world champions have advanced the art of turntablism and go down in the history books for pushing the limits of what humans can do with technology.
