The festival will be filled with music, installations, parties and entertainment, truly celebrating design within this cultural hub.

With over 150 events, a series of pop up exhibitions, installations, talks, performances, music and workshops, the festival is a showcase of cutting edge design from some of the biggest names in the industry.

This year the design community flocked to Clerkenwell with over 24,000 registered for the event!

Clerkenwell is home to over 60 showrooms, a multitude of architectural and creative practices. This cultural hub is the perfect location to host an international festival that celebrates all disciplines of design.

The showrooms of Clerkenwell throw open their doors to host an exciting programme of talks, debates and workshops. Topics will include pressing issues in design from industry leaders and thinkers.

Clerkenwell is filled with historic venues and architecture making it an ideal location to exhibit design in a new and exciting way. As well as returning to the Farmiloe Building CDW ventured underground to the House of Detention. ABOUT THE ARTISTS

“Crossing Borders” Group Exhibition

•Dal was born in Beijing, China in 1984 and is currently based in Cape Town, South Africa. He studied sculpture at the Institute of Fine Arts. The tactile quality of his three-dimensional work is complimented by the gestural approach and ribbon-like structure of forms in his works on canvas.

•Stinkfish was born in Bogotá, Colombia. Drawing inspiration from all things that make a city tick, he turns faces of unsuspecting people into vibrant portraits full of energetic emotion. With work created on reclaimed surfaces such as vintage record covers, magazines and metal shelving, his work cleverly mixes beauty and grit. Using a color palate that captures the flavor of the South American streets.

•Faith 47 was born in Cape Town, South Africa. Her images reconstruct lost objects, broken-down cars, old factories and dusty side roads of forgotten towns. She investigates how humans interact with their environment, what scratches and memories they leave behind

•Otto Schade was born in Concepcion, Chile. He uses his ribbons to compose beautifully intricate images, often referencing popular culture. However, he also creates more thought-provoking works that resonate with deep and symbolic meaning. Schade has forged a reputation as one of London’s foremost street artists.

•Martin Whatson was born in Oslo, Norway in 1984. He has a continuous urge to search for beauty in what is commonly dismissed as ugly, out of style or simply left behind. He looks for inspirations in city landscapes and old soon to be demolished buildings. This interest for decay has helped develop his style, motives and composition and he enjoys creating either unity or conflict between materials and motives. His latest solo show in Tokyo, Love Tour, sold out pre and during the opening night.

•David Walker was born in UK. Working in portraiture, painting freehand, yet using only spray paint and without the aid of brushes, David has developed a signature multi-layered style. Walker’s work brilliantly marries both street and fine art. His use of ‘lowbrow’, contemporary materials and deliberate references to the worst excesses of graffiti juxtapose the classical portrait style to disarming effect.

•David Shillinglaw was born in Saudi Arabia but has always lived in London. His work moves between street and studio, from small hand made books, to paintings on canvas, and large scale wall murals. He has enjoyed applying his fine art practice to a number of other contexts, which range from theatre set designs, to album cover design.

•Fin Dac was born in Cork, Eire. In a relatively short urban art career, he has defined and perfected an atypical paint/stencil style that ignores the accepted visual language of street art almost completely - He calls it Urban Aesthetics (a modern-day take on the 19th century art movement).

•Ben Slow was born in London, UK. He uses a synthesis of spray paint, emulsions, acrylics, inks and markers to create a unique style that blends fine art portraiture and photo-realism with his trademark chaotic drips and bursts of paint. These varied techniques create a style that is rich in texture and high in energy.

•Snik was born in Rutland, UK. Working with delicate techniques of textures and layering, Snik’s compositions are regarded as fine art with urban roots. His work consist of an intense build of eight to nine layers of spray with darkness pushing stencil art in a new direction.

•Joseph Loughborough was born in Portsmouth, UK. He spent his formative years playing in the derelict boatyards and creeks of Portsmouth. Honesty, expressionism and possibly exorcism can be read from his impulsive and intuitive rapid-fire mark making, which strive to grasp a comprehension of our human condition. Questions are frequently asked of the viewer about how we interpret our oft-untold fears and desires.

•Klone was born in Harkov, Ukraine. He is a master of reinvention, having defined and redefined his creative scope with bodies of work that ranged in years from black and white abstraction to earthy illustration and his current stark watercolor works on paper. Klone has exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions at Speak Easy, Tel Aviv, Fresh Paint Art Fair, Tel Aviv, GO Gallery, Amsterdam, Carmichael Gallery, Los Angeles, Anno Domini Gallery, San Jose, Helenbeck Gallery, Nice, Inoperable Gallery, Vienna and Urban Angel, London, amongst others

•Banksy was born in Bristol, UK. He will be featured with some iconic secondary market pieces.

•Inkie was born in Bristol, UK. He has been a dominant force on the urban art scene for over 20 years. Originally from Bristol but now an adopted Londoner, Inkie has turned his artistic affections to graphic and clothing design as well as a full-time role as Head of Creative Design at SEGA.

After completing her degree, Am began consulting for renowned designer J.W.Anderson on his Autumn Winter ’09 Knitwear collection that debuted at The Man show during London Fashion Week.

Wanting to pursue her talent in knit for a broader audience, Am began working on numerous projects and collaborations for interior companies within the fashion business; and was offered an exclusive exhibition at Osterley Park where she showcased a new collection of knitted wire canvases. 

Am Golhar used her expertise in Knitwear specialising in high quality yarns such as wools, alpaca’s and cashmere to launch her own desirable luxury menswear collection.

WHAT IS SWITCH? 
Switch is the dedicated and specialist streetwear area of Stitch previewing at the SS13 show this July. 
Switch gives the flourishing streetwear market an open platform to showcase the innovative and pioneering brands dominating the European and International streetwear arena. An eclectic cross section of independent brands from the up and coming to the well established will exhibit in the Switch area. This creative new section will host streetwear brands from across the world including Crooks & Castles, The Hundreds, Brixton and Rook that indicate the level of brands set to show for Switch’s launch season. Exciting experiential elements are planned for Switch including a barber shop, Dj’s, live music artists and a tattoo parlour.

WHERE?
Switch is a bespoke platform within Stitch that offers the specialist streetwear brands on show a cost effective all inclusive set up positioned at the entrance of the 
main Stitch area. 

Based in the heart of Islington at the business design centre, Switch will be open from 15th – 16th July 2012.

WHY?
We have identified the growth and strength of streetwear across the globe and felt that the section of the market deserved a showcase platform in the UK. 
By giving a dedicated section to these brands we can continue to support the strong streetwear offering and celebrate the International success of this sector within the menswear marketplace.
