A series of new galleries will be open within the Museum of London in May 2010, which will recount the story of London and those who live and work in the capital, from 1666 to the present day. Officially titled Galleries Of Modern London, it is hoped that these new spaces will offer a further insight into the great city, and with its location, present the Museum as a whole, right in the heart of the capital during the run-up to the 2012 London Olympics.Several highlights of the new Galleries include the City Gallery, which houses the 253-year old Lord Mayor's Coach, positioned by a large window vista, offering both wondrous external (from London Wall) and internal views. Originally commissioned for the princely sum of £860, the highly-decorated Coach leaves the Museum every November, for the annual Lord Mayor's Show, and is placed within a gallery which informs the visitor of the myriad of workers and types of employment within the Square Mile. Another highlight is the evocative Pleasure Gardens, with the Georgian-costumed mannequins presented in hats by Philip Treacy and metal wigs by Yasemen Hussein, augmented by a 'live' performance of how pleasure gardens were used by the city's inhabitants, during the 1800s. In collaboration with Film London, digital artists The Light Surgeons present a bi-annual film commission, LDN24, which offers a 24 hours view of the life of the city. Over 7,000 objects make up the constantly-evolving story of the city and its environs, and the Galleries of Modern London make for a wondrous addition to the culture and social history of this great city.

Looking down on the Scottish capital from its rocky perch, the famous fortress dominates the Edinburgh skyline with magnificent views over the city and surrounding countryside. The National War Memorial and Scotland's Crown Jewels are both situated within the castle....[more]
Looking down on the Scottish capital from its rocky perch created by volcanic activity around 340million BC, Edinburgh Castle is one of the city's most popular tourist attractions and the focal point for the Edinburgh Tattoo in August. The magnificent fortress also claims the oldest building in the city: the chapel built around 1130 by King David I in honour of his mother, Queen Margaret, who died of a broken heart after her husband Malcolm III was killed in an ambush. The tiny chapel is open to public view, complete with a stain-glassed window of the queen. The Scottish Crown Jewels comprising the crown, sword and sceptre, are an unmissable part of a visit to the castle, along with the Stone Of Destiny, the slab of sandstone used as the coronation seat of Scottish Kings. The Great Hall, constructed in 1511, boasts an impressive hammerbeam roof and out on the ramparts, you will find one of the world's oldest cannons, Mons Meg. Crowds gather Monday to Saturday to see the master gunner fire to signal one o'clock - a tradition since 1861 - and for more history, pore over exhibits at The National War Museum Scotland, The Royal Scots Regimental Museum and The Regimental Museum Of The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards before a moment of reflection at the Scottish National War Memorial, dedicated to countrymen and -women who lost their lives in both World Wars.
